The Nereus is not like any jet ski you’ve ever seen before. It’s an entirely new class of PWC. Not only does it look completely crazy, it is capable of traveling both above and under the water and it runs without any fuel at all.
The model is designed by Mathias Koehler and is currently at the prototype/conceptual stage.
How does the Nereus move without fuel?
Without doubt the biggest claim of the Nereus is that it is fuel free. People’s biggest objections to jet skis is that they are noisy and harmful to the environment. It seems like a Nereus jet ski would answer both these objections simultaneously.
The Nereus is actually powered by wind. How exactly it does this isn’t entirely clear yet. Koehler describes the Nereus as being “kite-driven”. I can’t even imagine how you’d get a jet ski to be powered by the wind. Sails might get you up to 3 mph, but I don’t think that’s how it’s done somehow.
How is the Nereus steered?
The steering method differs depending on whether the Nereus is traveling above or under the water. When moving above, the Nereus has foot pedals which are used to control the direction. Below the water, the fins at the side of the Nereus help it move beneath the waves and these are controlled by the handlebars.
Where can I buy a Nereus?
Woah, hold your horses, it’s early days yet and you can’t buy a Nereus jet ski just yet. It’s still at the prototype stage so it will be a few years until the Nereus is available to the public to buy.
Where did the Nereus get its name?
Nereus is a Greek God. He was the son of Pontus and Gaia. Pontus was the god of the sea and Gaia the god of the earth (presumably a reference to the Nereus’s ability to travel both above and below the water) and was himself a sea god. He was also a busy chap, finding the time to father 50 daughters.
What has Mathias Koehler designed other than the Nereus?
The Nereus isn’t Mathias Koehler’s first invention, he’s also invented a number of other items - all of which are a little out of the ordinary. Once such object is the Rocking Wheel Chair. It’s not a wheelchair in the traditional sense but a chair in the shape of a wheel.
Is the Nereus for real?
The Nereus seems like a completely crazy PWC. I can hardly believe all the claims about it. It is only at the ‘conceptual stage’ so who knows whether we’ll actually see a Nereus moving over and under the water ever.
If anyone involved with making it feels the need to convince me it works, I’d be willing to risk life and limb in order to test out the Nereus.
