With the summer now upon us, many of us will be getting our jet skis and seadoos out for the first time this year. Having been stored away for winter, they many take a little work to get back up and running as they should. It’s a perfect opportunity to make sure that your jet ski is ship shape and ready to roll for the summer. This is a quick guide to summerizing your jet ski.

Of course, ideally, we should have made sure that the jet ski was entirely winterized when we put it away. If you did keep your jet ski full with a mix of fuel and stabilizer over the winter, you should have fewer problems getting it started. However, we are not all so conscientious (I can think of a number of occasions in the past when I’ve not done what I knew I’d regret later). If your jet ski has some serious problems, you may want to take to a professional jet ski mechanic to get it sorted out and into fit, riding state. However, if you are confident in this area and there are no major problems, you could tackle it yourself. Cleaning the jet ski up and getting it ready for summer isn’t too hard of a job.

Have a general clean up of the jet ski. Depending on how it was stored, it’s likely that your jet ski will have been home to a few bugs and spiders over the winter. Give it a general clean around paying particular attention to the exhaust. Make extra sure that there is nothing clogging your exhaust.

One of the biggest problems with over winter storage is moisture. Moisture can really attack your spark plugs if you’re not careful. Pull out all your spark plugs, look at the bores and check them for rust. Before you crank it over, it’s wise to pour just a little oil into each cylinder. It’s not entirely necessary, but it’s better to be on the safe side.

Next, give your carburetors a good check over. Make sure they aren’t dusty. If there is any dust there, it could bring harm to your engine.

Finally, take all the gas out of the jet ski and run some fresh gas through it. If it wasn’t properly stored, there could be a few gummed up areas in the engine. Running some fresh gas through these parts may be enough to dislodge them and get it functioning properly again. An extra bit of STA-BIL might help this process.

Summerizing your jet ski is a bit of a chore. But just keep in mind all the fun you’ll be having once it’s done.
